Be Warned

Don't let this happen to you:
My fellow stashers, be warned. We are in the process of changing my sewing zone from one floor to another floor. This requires all fabric to be moved from one floor to another. In my innocence, I let Mr. Hunting Creek pack up all of the fabric so he could re-arrange the former sewing cave. He started saying things like: I can't believe you have this much fabric. and You'll never sew all of these patterns in three lifetimes!
He broke out in a cold sweat. He started to freak out.
So be warned! Do not expose sewing rookies to the overwhelmingness of your awesome fabric stash. They. Can't. Take. It.
He's OK now. I talked him down.
(But it cost me a Pool Table.)

Yeah, I went through that with DH too. When he first moved in, he and the cable guy were looking to see if there was a cable connection in the closet. He opened the fabric closet and was shocked by the contents. For a while, he was worried I was a secret hoarder.

Hah! I try not to expose my DH to that, so my stash is separated into smaller groupings so as not to offend his gentle sensibilities. And because I need bigger closets (but never less fabric!!)

Too funny, I think I will heed your warning.

Even fellow (former) sewers do that, like my mom. She thinks I am a hoarder and regularly mentions the hoarders reality show episodes to me. She had a stash in her day but disposed of it when they moved, now that she's retired, she's anal about homemaking cleanliness and can't see how 4 kids really make a mess. There were only 2 of us, we were pretty sedate, so mine just blow her mind.

LOL!
I hope your new sewing zone will be ready soon :)

Ha, rookie mistake. Never, EVER let them see the stash. This totally removes all chances of, for example, complaining bitterly about the expenditure of hard-earned money on things like, for example, video games. Or iTunes. Just as an example.

(on the other hand, totally awesome to have someone to move it all for you.)

This is how I know I have an addiction--I try to hide my behaviors. My stash is on open shelving, but I think you still don't quite get the overwhelmingness of it like if you tried to box it up. A terrifying thought.

When we moved into our present home, with the 150 sf sewing room, which I immediately filled, DH looked at my fabric closet with amazement. Then he turned to me and said, "I am so glad you also have a hobby that takes up lots of space."

Was he being sweet? Or was that a quid pro quo warning?

So true! My sewing room is also the guest room, and in the not-that-long time since our last guests I have managed to fill the remaining space in the closet with more fabric. I wonder how much I can use up before the next visitors arrive.... I'd better get sewing!

I used to store fabric in MANY different locations: various different closets, so it didn't look like so much all together. A little in EVERY closet, a little in dresser drawers, hanging on hangers.... all for the optical illusion.

Major giggle on that! My worst stash--home dec fabric--is hidden in plain view and no one really realizes quite how substantial it is!

If the collection was tools, or fishing gear there wouldn't be a peep but fabric? People don't get what you do with fabric even if they know that you sew. Women, we need to support other sewists and their stashes!

Oh so funny! You know what is even funnier? I have to hide it from my own self! ... or I will assume the role of DH and give myself crap for collecting so much!!
