Mutton Dressed as Lamb?

Finally I feel like sewing. Mr. Hunting Creek is going fishing tomorrow, so this is the perfect opportunity to make something. Dear Gentle Readers, please tell it to me straight: is this top too young for me? Is this the kind of thing that no fifty year old woman should wear in public? As I have confessed previously, I have the unerring taste of a circus high wire performer when it comes to fabric and patterns. I love those puffy sleeves, but the older more mature circus performer in me is saying, "Hun, those might be too much sleeve."
Does anyone else love patterns that are just not right for their age or lifestyle?
Have you ever made one and then put it on and thought, "Oh no! I look like a clown!"
I should probably make the plain sleeve version instead. Sigh...

I used to know how to dress myself, but now that I'm 50 I feel clueless. Around-the-house (ATH) wear is not a problem: I wear/sew whatever I want, and some of it is a little goofy. But how to be age-appropriate in public without leaving my personality at home or turning into a boring middle-aged lady? Still wrestling with that one.

I say make the outrageous sleeves if you really love them, but (alas) must recommend ATH wear only. Make another top with the plain sleeves for when you leave the house.

I'm 61 and have the same issues. I would do the sleeves and skip the mini-skirt! Life is short.

Being over 50 heading toward 60 and like Gwen and Venus' comments, it is hard to know what I should wear or not. If you think you can pull off the sleeve look, you should go for it. I think one should dress themselves based on what they like to wear and that they know they look good in. Forget what the fashion trends are, some trends work for me and some don't.

Sister, I've been a card-carrying member of AARP for several years now, so I'm qualified to respond! I do love all versions of the top you're looking at . . . if you're comfortable enough to wear the puffy sleeves, go for 'em! I prefer the plain longer sleeve version myself, but that's personal style is all about! It's sad that so many of the new styles/patterns seem to be designed for the young nubile crowd, but I'm certainly not going to shroud myself in boring garments just because I'm now in my golden years!

Well, the sleeves are "Mutton" sleeves, but you're certainly not going to be mutton dressed as lamb wearing them! Go for it.
