Exhibit A - the 50's sleeves

My dad was kind enough to send a picture of my mom in her glorious dress. Doesn't she look beautiful? Please note the sleeves: cute, tasteful, totally appropriate for church and reception.
Also I love the hoop skirt. When I was a child I always wondered how the skirts poofed out like that. "a special petticoat", my mom would say. Oh, how I wanted one! But the dresses of the 70's were pretty much hoop free. Sigh - the 50's gals had all the fun. And no one would ever have suggested that they wear strapless or sleeveless dresses in the fall or winter. There were Rules back then. In some ways I kind of miss them. Without rules, the saying goes, we have chaos.

Awww, how gorgeous! They just don't make 'em like that anymore!

Don't forget the strapless look was big in the fifties. My mom's wedding dress was actually strapless with a big full skirt and a gazillion petticoats. But she had a little fitted short-sleeved jacket she wore over it.

I have told my daughter the style better be back to sleeves by the time she gets married. I have seen two many doughy brides in strapless gowns.

This year's Burda wedding issue had one strapless, one spaghetti strap, one sleeveless (maybe two), and two or THREE sleeved dresses.

For what that's worth.

Maybe Germans prefer sleeves?

Actually, I think all clothing from the 40s and 50s was far more creative than what is available now. They had a whole buffet of sleeve styles to choose from - a silhouette could be completely changed just by the switching out of a sleeve: long, bracelet length, 3/4, elbow, short, cap, etc. Now, all we have is no top, sleeveless, cap, and long. And in bridal or formal-wear, it's either topless or sleeveless. I can't get over what brides who marry between the months of November and April DO - bad enough to be nervous on one's wedding day, but far worse to show up in the photos forever with blue lips and goose pimples.
