When he retired, I tried to do it myself but resented it. Now I send my own repairs out to the neighborhood cleaners.

The husband does the cleaning and the wife does the alterations side of the business. She has 25+ years experience between the 20 yrs in a Korean clothing factory and the time running the family business.

For more complicated stuff, I have a friend who does couture-quality work (movie and theater costumes) for only $20/hour. But she is very selective about her clients and their projects.

She declines anything that doesn't interest her and anyone who doesn't know the difference between ok and exceptional work. And she makes me wait if some other work that pays better appears. She has to make a living.

She recently relined a vintage (1950s or early 1960s) cashmere coat I found at a thrift shop with silk. It took her a day and cost my $160 labor, $50 coat, $40 silk. I had to wait 2.5 months until she had an opening in her schedule, but it was worth it.badmomgoodmomhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11569728075698885020noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7716616407420487026.post-54043224375691689762009-12-07T23:06:07.237-05:002009-12-07T23:06:07.237-05:00I also hate altering clothes! I may be selfish, but 95% of what I sew is for myself - I don't think anyone else would appreciate it as much as I do :-)Nancy Winninghamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01291320098379550586noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7716616407420487026.post-20319675083865747392009-12-05T20:14:51.013-05:002009-12-05T20:14:51.013-05:00I don't like altering!!!!! Lately I've been having fun turning my old skirts into dresses for my niece. It's my hobby and my leisure time!

I don't even alter my own clothes, as others have said. On one of my last RTW shopping excursions over two years ago I bought two pairs of pants. They're still waiting to be hemmed (easy) and taken in at the CB waist for swayback (bleh).Gretchen the Household Deityhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16882578423517346342noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7716616407420487026.post-89477855314995627212009-12-03T13:52:13.619-05:002009-12-03T13:52:13.619-05:00Hemming jeans. I usually end up hemming my husband's jeans though, after they've been sitting in my sewing area for 2 months.Christinahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05646506480120500856noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7716616407420487026.post-88181014054116018612009-12-03T07:44:44.982-05:002009-12-03T07:44:44.982-05:00Your rant made me laugh! THAT was the beginning of the end of THAT relationship! Except for doing small sewing projects for my sister, I don't sew for anyone else!AuntieAllynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06192122099879165907noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7716616407420487026.post-79320433348647130572009-12-03T00:25:17.933-05:002009-12-03T00:25:17.933-05:00Bleh. Even getting paid for it didn't lessen the pain!gwensewshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05809115166600229262noreply@blogger.com
