My sister and I (being the SoCal girls we are) had of course never had a chestnut before, so we got some to try. They were... interesting. Fleshy almost. The taste was definitely earthy though. And, well, it wasn't terrible. And now I can say I have had a roasted chestnut. But given the choice there are lots of other nuts I would rather eat. Like pretty much any other kind of nut. Except maybe Brazil nuts. Those things are just weird.T. You just haven't had a fresh chestnut ...NOOOO! You just haven't had a fresh chestnut yet. They are divine!

In autumn, you can find fresh chestnuts at Asian grocery stores. I got to a local Japanese supermarket that roasts them fresh in the parking lot. Then the young Japanese boys/young men, hand you a plastic chestnut popper tool, show you how to use it, and hand feed you the first one.

I know women who queue up for chestnuts just to be hand fed by these cuties. Not me, of course. I go for the fresh, hot, sweet chestnuts. Really.

BTW, my mom bought them from a Chinese grocery, put them in a brown paper bag and baked them in the oven until we heard them pop (like popcorn).

Old chestnuts don't contain enough moisture to pop. They taste evil. An Asian person would never purchase old, dry chestnuts. I guess they go to Williams Sonoma to die.badmomgoodmomhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11569728075698885020noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7716616407420487026.post-24165661688105266502013-11-08T10:53:55.346-05:002013-11-08T10:53:55.346-05:00I like chestnuts! Haven't tried the ones cooked by street sellers though as they are so hard to peel.Juliethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12320920329295669197noreply@blogger.com
